PATIENT INFORMATION

This drug is prescribed and administered intravenously (directly into the bloodstream) by trained doctors in a controlled hospital situation.  It is given to treat acute episodes of congestive heart failure in patients who are experiencing shortness of breath at rest or in doing even light activity. 

What Is It?
It is a synthetic substance which mimics the activity of a human peptide molecule that the body normally secretes in the presence of heart failure.

How Does It Work?
Natrecor relaxes the muscles that surround the body’s blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood throughout the body and improving elimination of excess fluid in the body by the kidneys.

Side Effects
Because this medication may lower blood pressure and cause heart beat irregularities, it is only given in those situations that provide ongoing monitoring of vital signs.
