SIDE EFFECTS
Cream and Ointment
In controlled clinical
studies involving 319 patients [for cream] and 812 patients [for
ointment], the incidence
of adverse reactions associated with the use of mometasone furoate
cream was 1.6%. and mometasone
furoate ointment was 4.8%. Reported reactions included burning,
pruritus, and skin atrophy. Reports of rosacea
associated with the use of mometasone furoate cream and ointment
have also been received. In
controlled clinical
studies (n=74) involving pediatric
patients 2 to 12 years of age, the incidence of adverse experiences
associated with the use of mometasone furoate cream and ointment
was approximately 7%. Reported reactions included stinging, pruritus,
and furunculosis.
The following additional local
adverse reactions have been reported infrequently with topical
corticosteroids, but may occur more frequently with the use of occlusive
dressings. These reactions are listed in an approximate decreasing
order of occurrence: irritation,
dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation,
perioral dermatitis,
allergic contact dermatitis,
secondary infection, striae, and miliaria.
Lotion
The following local adverse
reactions were reported with mometasone furoate lotion
during clinical studies
with 209 patients: acneiform
reaction, 2; burning, 4; and itching, 1. In
an irritation sensitization
study with 156 normal
subjects, folliculitis
was reported in 4.
The following local adverse
reactions have been reported infrequently when other topical
dermatologic corticosteroids have been used as recommended. These
reactions are listed in an approximate
decreasing order of occurrence:
burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis,
acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral
dermatitis, allergic
contact dermatitis,
maceration of the skin, secondary infection, skin
atrophy, striae, miliaria.
